Ellen Cowie

Born and raised in Peterborough, Ellen Cowie has travelled extensively across Canada, living at times in Provincial and National Parks to which she attributes her love of wildlife paintings.
Ellen, her husband and six children have lived for years in the community of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation on Lake Simcoe. Ellen's native status was gained through marriage and her art speaks to the respect and high regard she holds for her husband's heritage.

Art has been Ellen's passion since she could first hold a pencil. It was fuelled by her Grandmother's oil painting as well as watching her Uncle's skillful hands as he captured his subjects in minimal charcoal strokes. Fascinated by the potential beauty that canvas can hold, Ellen strives to use her art to portray life as she experiences it. Ellen is passionate and unwavering in exploring and liberating a wide range of motifs on her canvas with deliberate freedom.

Children are naturally the models that steer Ellen's art as well as her life. Wildlife adds an opportunity to express what she has been so fortunate to encounter in her travels. She has had a special affinity for portraiture since childhood. These elements form a rich collection of paintings now on display at Whetung Gallery.
Ellen's formal art training included a successful year of Fine Arts at Guelph University after which life has remained her tutor. As she continues to gain recognition and respect as an artist, her artwork has found its way into collections in England, United States, and across Canada.
