John Kowarski
Whetung Ojibwa Crafts and Art Gallery

John Michael Kowarski

John spent much of his youth exploring the backwoods and lakes of the Kawarthas. Once an avid hunter, he had many opportunities to get close to the natural environment and was touched by the rhythms and interconnectedness of the natural world. Over time, he replaced the rifle with the paintbrush and now attempts to capture that mystery. During that transition, his recognition has grown and resulted in first place awards from The Gallery on the Lake, Buckhorn School of Fine Art, Ontario, where his work has been exhibited, and the Whetung Gallery, where his work is presently on display. Through his teaching of art as an educator, to both children and adults, John passed on, not only his skill, but also his love of nature and our common heritage.

John's very personal and unique interpretations of nature's images come from a deep and abiding commitment to awaken in the viewer an appreciation of our links with the primordial past. Ostensibly a self-taught artist, John's primary medium is acrylics. His interpretation and style are unique and continue to evolve. Within each piece can be found the detail and depth of understanding, of the need to depict nature in such a way, as to promote and maintain a respect for our heritage, and ways that are too fast becoming foreign. No matter what the subject, John breathes life and a spirit into them. Much as the native people understand the timelessness of the land and natural history, John sees in his pieces that same essence. His works characterize the native respect for Mother Earth and their belief that we are transients on this planet and Earth Keepers for future generations. John has recently traded his home in Hamilton, Ontario, where he was born and raised, for a log cabin, in Dunsford, near Bobcaygeon, Ontario, where he continues to pursue his love of the out doors and passion for painting.
