Looking After Me

$10.95
Looking After Me is a children's picture book developed by the Penticton Indian Band Health Department to teach young children about the choices they can make to live healthy. This book in the Caring for Me series discusses ways children deal with feelings and emotions. Told in a sensitive manner through a story about a quail extended family, the book covers life lessons taught by loving quail parents. A young quail loves being with family and mother tells the child that everyone has a special place in our hearts that help us feel happy or sad. When we laugh or cry these emotions make our bodies stronger. But saying hurtful words to one another when we're angry makes the other person sad. The young quail enjoys dancing and his father reminds the youth that we each have a sacred circle around us. No one should come inside this circle if we say no. The little quails stay close to their parents until they grow up. This keeps the children safe. Occasionally aunt quail takes care of the little ones. She is a trusted family member. The little quails learn that when they grow older they should look after the young ones so that their sacred circles are safe. When we are part of a loving and caring family we have something special. Each one is a special gift from the Creator. The bold and simple drawings by artist Marie-Micheline Hamelin convey the message of making healthy choices. The author and illustrator are careful to make this book suitable for children of all backgrounds.
